ICLS Pakistan Chapter Initiatives

Summary: The International Council for the Life Sciences (ICLS) is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to enhancing global biological security and safety and reducing the risks of misuse of the life sciences. Founded in December 2005, the membership-based ICLS provides a forum for the sustained engagement of the life sciences community and governments on a global basis.

Summary: The advances in various fields of science bring incredible promises, on one hand; also carry potential harm and risks, on the other. The efforts on local as well as international levels are continuing to find out the ways to ensure that the sciences are to be used solely for our collective benefits. The proposed workshop on responsible conduct of science will provide a global forum to prevent the use of the sciences to cause deliberate harm and to discuss and to suggest the roles of scientific communitiy to play in this regard.

Quaid-i-Azam University's efforts in Dual Use Education Awareness

Summary: QAU initiated a gap analysis of current extent of bio-security education in Pakistani universities. Funded by the US State Department's Bio-Engagement Program, QAU led the development and distribution of a questionnaire, with the support of the Landau network Centro Volta, using a methodology similar to that employed in previous LNCV BDRC studies, but targetted at students and covering various sets of questions.

The Lahore Conference

Summary: The Lahore meeting was mandated by the Islamabad conference. In Lahore all agreed on the need for explicit action to encourage the responsible conduct of science engender more public support and create the right conditions that will foster high quality international collaboration. It was recognized that successful science is very much an international enterprise.

The Concept of The Conferences

Summary: The conduct of responsible science lies in the first instance with the scientists themselves. However, they not only have a duty to themselves but also to society as a whole - that is to say to governments, academia, private companies, and to the public at large. At the most basic level science should be conducted to bring benefits to humanity requiring a conscious calculation of the risks involved in any endeavour.
